Hameed first gained significant attention in 2017 when he played a crucial role in resolving the Faizabad sit-in led by Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan through a negotiated settlement. This event marked his emergence as a notable player in Pakistan’s security apparatus.

Hameed captured international headlines in the year 2021 when images surfaced of him drinking tea with Taliban members at Kabul’s Serena Hotel, shortly after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021. These visuals were widely interpreted as a sign of Pakistan’s backing of the Taliban during their conflict with the United States and its allies.
Hameed was often accused of using harsh methods to please his political bosses and advance his career. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif even claimed that Hameed, along with some judges and another general, played a role in his ouster in 2017.
In November 2022, just months before his planned retirement, Hameed was forced to step down after General Munir became the army chief, despite Imran Khan’s attempts to keep him in place, highlighting tensions between Khan and the military.
Hameed also faced allegations from former minister Faisal Vawda in May 2023, who accused him of being the mastermind behind the Al-Qadir Trust case, in which Imran Khan and his wife were accused of illegally acquiring large sums of money and land.
Early Life and Background
Hammed grew up in Latifal, Chakwal. Faiz comes from a family rooted in the traditions of Chakwal, a region famous for producing military leaders. He has three brothers: Sardar Sikandar Hayat, Sardar Najaf, and Sardar Khizar.
The family’s legacy was marked by a tragedy in 2016 when Sikandar Hayat lost his life in an accident, a loss that deeply affected them all. Sardar Najaf Hameed, another of his brothers, serves as a land revenue officer in their hometown, upholding the family’s connection to the community. The Hameed family, with its strong ties to Chakwal, embodies the area’s longstanding reputation for military service and leadership.
He is a graduate of the Command & Staff College in Quetta where he was later commissioned into the Baloch Regiment of the Pakistan Army, marking the beginning of his military career.
