His Succesful Career

After finishing his studies, Phil got his first job as a prison therapist at Rikers Island where he worked for a few years. It was not that easy for him to work with dangerous criminals struggling mentally and emotionally addressing all their problems to him.

All the experience with his patients in the prison helped him come up with a method he described as “The Tools” which turned out to be quite effective in helping his patients by guiding them in the best ways to recover and giving them a boost to reach all their true potentials.

Even though it seemed to be quite a success, it was not as easy as it may seem to Phil, in a conversation with The Omega Institue (a non-profit New York educational retreat center) Phil described what motivated him to come up with “The Tools” saying;

I actually developed the tools out of frustration. Back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, I was frustrated with psychotherapy. It dealt with the causes of people’s problems, but it didn’t help so much where the rubber meets the road.

He also added;

I felt like I’d hit a blank spot where I’d take a person to a certain level of self-understanding, but then they needed to do something to actively change things, and I didn’t have anything to offer them.

Maybe they needed to do something external, like get out of a relationship or confront somebody, or maybe it was something internal like stop worrying or being so judgmental. I felt like I’d lead the horse to water but didn’t have a way to make it drink.

I began to make up solutions on the spot, to force myself to say something. After doing this many times, and working with hundreds of clients, I found some wisdom surfacing out of my unconscious. All that repetition resulted in about 20 or 25 tools that really work for people.

After a successful yet frustrating career at Rikers Island, Phil made a move and decided to become his boss and opened a private start-up in New York before he moved to live in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s. In Los Angeles, Stutz moved forward with”The Tools” to an even broader audience than in New York.

Phil co-wrote “The Tools Book” with fellow author Barry Michels which went on to become the New York Times best-selling book in 2012. After that, the two partners wrote “Coming Alive” which was released in 2017.

In 2022, Film director Jonah Hill produced a Netflix documentary film called “Stutz” which focused on the life and long career of Phil Stutz who was his therapist. The documentary focuses on a chain of deep conversations with Jonah and Phil’s life stories and mostly their mental health. Jonah even opted out of promoting the film to avoid getting anxiety attacks.
